Network Set-Up
New modem? New router? It is important to upgrade your connections to stay safe, secure, and connected.
The most common set-up
From your internet provider, say Charter Spectrum or Comcast Xfinity, you'll purchase an internet package at a particular speed: 100, 200, 300, 400 Mbps and so on, and now even 1 Gbps.
You'll need a modem to connect to the internet from your home. Either you will purchase your own or the provider will "give you one." This "gift" will be rental on your monthly bill. If you decide to purchase your own modem, it will pay for itself in the long run and you may have more control over it. The modem connects to the coax outlet on your wall via a coaxial cable. You may need to call or go online to activate your modem.
The modem may be a 2-in-1 where it is a modem and a router. There are pros and cons to these devices, but either way the router will be able to provide wireless connection to your devices while at home. You will decide your network name (SSID) and network password. From there you can connect any IoT (Internet of things) device.
So, in summary:
Start with your provider.
Get the modem and connect it to the coax outlet via coaxial cable.
Call or go online to activate the modem.
Configure the router with the credentials for the SSID and password.
Connect the devices around your home.
